摘要(英)This thesis explores development of mother-daughter relationships in Jane Austen’s novels. From Northanger Abbey to the last novel Persuasion, Austen’s heroines manifest Nancy Chodorow’s theory of motherhood. Heroines in the beginning identify themselves with their mothers. Then, when they are aware that their mothers can not satisfy them of ideal mother images, heroines tend to establish their own identity. Heroines finally form individuality and possess their maternal identify. Chapter One examines mother-daughter-symbiosis in Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility. In these two novels, Catherine Morland and the elder Dashwood sisters are not conscious of difference between subject and object. In other words, they can not distinguish self and the other. Catherine and the Dashwood sisters in mother-daughter integrity act as extension of their mothers’ maternal identity, imitating feminine and maternal identity similar to their mothers. In the second chapter, individuation and separateness are the focus to explain maternalization of Jane and Elizabeth Bennet. As Jane and Elizabeth recognize conflicts between their mother and a mother they long for in their identification with their mother, they refuse to be in a relationship of mother-daughter oneness. During their searching for sense of self, Jane and Elizabeth project ideal mother images on their surrogate mother Mrs. Gardiner and, meanwhile, introject ideal mother images on themselves. Also, Jane and Elizabeth manipulate their father’s patriarchal power to separate from Mrs. Bennet’s maternal control. Chapter Three presents Austenian ideal feminine and maternal personality. Exemplifying Fanny Price’s education in Mansfield Park, Austen criticizes conventional motherhood and, moreover, implies her ideal mother figures. Meanwhile, it is inferred that fathers or those who possesses patriarchal power can intervene in daughters’ learning when daughters can not be conformed or be educated propriety and virtues by their mothers. The final chapter of Emma and Persuasion explores heroines’ maternal behaviors and mother-daughter re-union. Emma Woodhouse behaves as a mimesis or “retro” of her absent mother, symbolizing that she is still suffered from mental trauma of her absent mother. In contrast, Anne Elliot shows her maturity in motherhood, which means that Anne re-unites her identification with her mother and her individual maternal identity.
