摘要(中)愛倫坡的短篇故事中充斥著引人入勝的驚恐情節。透過安排故事當中的空間場景,這些驚悚的效果更進一步揭露主角們的內心世界。本文企圖透過分析四種不同的空間來探討愛倫坡故事中的環境特質不僅只是壓迫著各個角色,同時也反應出人類對於恐懼所產生的心理反應。 第一章將探討《活埋》和《陷阱與鐘擺》兩則故事中密閉空間對於角色們所製造出來的恐懼。然而,這些恐懼效應並非全然是負面的,相反地,他們引發了人類對於空間壓迫的抗拒並進而從中產生積極的力量來面對。 第二章將檢視《亞夏家古屋的崩塌》與《莉姬雅》當中的哥德式建築物。其中衝突性的裝飾特質則加深了主角們內心的恐懼。不若第一章的主角們得以克服外在環境的壓迫,本章角色無力去透視自己與建築物之間的關係。因此,深信屋子所帶來的影響而導致自己的死亡或瘋狂。 第三章將探討《莫格街的謀殺案》與《人群中的孤人》中城市帶來的意象。一方面來說,城市隱藏著罪惡與秘密。另一方面而言,空間場景則提供了線索讓主角們得以識破並解決罪惡與不可道出的秘密,同時也反應出角色本身的分析能力。 第四章分析《墜入大漩渦》當中自然帶來的衝擊。故事中的水手承受伴隨大自然而來的死亡威脅,然而,透過景仰自然的能力,水手反而從絕望當中得到了希望與救贖。
摘要(英)Abstract Edgar Allan Poe remarkably creates the effects horror in his tales. By arranging the settings, these horrific effects further project the protagonists’ inner worlds. This thesis aims to examine the interrelationship between the characters and their surroundings. By scrutinizing four types of spaces, the following analysis will reveal that the environmental features not only oppress the protagonists, but also reflect human beings’ mental responses toward what they have encountered. Chapter one focuses on spaces of confinement in “The Premature Burial” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.” Concealed settings are able to overwhelm the protagonists with horror. Nevertheless, the horrific effects are not entirely negative; instead, they evoke human beings’ positive responses against the spatial oppression and then breed strength out of them. Chapter two scrutinizes the gothic architecture in “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “Ligeia.” The contradictory decorative features enhance the inhabitants’ inner fears. Unlike the characters who overcome their surroundings in the previous chapter, the protagonists in this chapter fail to identify their connection with the architecture. Therefore, they indulge deeper in the spatial impacts that lead them to death or insanity. Chapter three explores the city scenes in “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Man of the Crowd.” The city scenes, on the one hand, shelter crimes and secrets. On the other hand, the settings provide clues to the protagonists so that they are able to discover the unsolved crimes and hidden secrets, which later project the characters’ mental ability. Chapter four analyzes the ocean in “A Descent into the Maelstrom.” The natural environment is portrayed as ferocious and ambivalent. The sailor suffers from death threats in the whirlpool; however, the spatial oppression does not only produce desperation, it also brings him hope through his admiration of nature, which leads him to survival.
